At the halfway point through the blizzard of 2015, Governor Gina Raimondo said the travel ban is working, crews are working to clean up the snow, and that Rhode Islanders should continue to “hunker down.”
“Blizzards conditions are going to be with us until 10:00am or 11:00am this morning, which means heavy snow and sustained winds and gusts of 35 miles per hour or more, so please everybody just sit tight, at least for a few more hours,” Raimondo told the WPRO Morning News with Gene Valicenti.
Raimondo was pleased to report the state of emergency was effective and that the travel ban enabled the Department of Transportation to keep many of the roads clear.
“We had almost no accidents through the night, very few abandoned vehicles; the roads are clear and that means the plows are holding steady [and] they’re just about keeping up.”
The high winds and heavy snowed knocked out power to 1,050 residents according to the National Grid, but officials are hopeful that as the winds diminish crews will be able to get to work to restore electricity.
The Governor will be addressing the media again at 11:00am.
