A second earthquake has been detected in Connecticut just nine miles away from the Rhode Island border. Both earthquakes hit just miles away from each other and less than a week apart.
The National Earthquake Center reports the second quake registered at a 3.3 magnitude and struck five miles east of Danielson CT (the site of the first earthquake) just after 6:30am on Monday morning. Last week’s seismic activity registered at a 2.2 magnitude.
Professor John Ebel of Boston College’s Western Observatory said the earthquake is a part of a swarm which has affected the region recently.
“If you look at earthquake activity in Japan or anywhere in the world, sometimes you have abig earthquake followed by small earthquakes, but sometimes you have a swarm or series of earthquakes where there is no one really big earthquake but a bunch of small ones that takes place,” said Ebel.
Ebel said an earthquake swarm is typical for the New England area.
Several callers contacted the WPRO Morning News with Gene Valicenti and described the event as a big boom.
There as being no reports of damage as a result of the earthquake.
