A vigil is set to be held in front of the Providence Journal in honor of the cartoonists of Charlie Hebdo who were killed in France earlier this week after gunman stormed their offices.
One of the organizers Isabelle Tadmoury said she started the movement to join the world-wide demonstration of Je Suis Charlie (I am Charlie) to honor the victims.
“It’s a symbol of solidarity for freedom of speech and freedom of the press,” said Tadmoury.
Another organizer, Ehsun Mirza, an ER doctor at Kent Hospital, says he is joining the movement to show moderate Muslims it is time to speak out against extremism.
“I am a Muslim and it has been far too long [since] moderate Muslims have said anything about how terrorism surrounding Islam is painting the entire 1.5 billion [person] population with the same brush,” said Mirza.
“More Muslims are like me, who are moderate [and] trying to help other people lead a simple civilized life.”
The vigil will be held outside the Providence Journal Saturday at 3:00pm.
