Providence firefighters rescued three individuals Friday after responding to a fire at a multi-family home on Zone Street.
Firefighters rushed to the scene and discovered three people trapped on the third floor. Crews tried to use a house ladder to reach the occupants, however a ladder crew was needed to get everybody out of the house.
Ten-year-old Charmaine Haney said she saw smoke in the house and rushed to tell her family to escape, but not before rescuing her six-month-old brother.
“I ran out of my room and there was a whole bunch of smoke so I ran to my mom’s room, and I told my uncle and afterwards I grabbed the baby and ran outside,” said Haney.
Haney said it was her siblings who were trapped upstairs.
The house sustained considerable damage in the fire and officials believe the blaze originated in a second floor bedroom.
One of the victims suffered injuries due to smoke inhalation and one firefighter pulled a muscle while fighting the blaze.
Five other occupants of the home escaped safely.
