As the City of New Bedford swore in seven new police officers on Monday, the execution-style killings of two New York City cops over the weekend weighed on the hearts of many.
“Those murders were a stark reminder of how dangerous the profession is,” said New Bedford Mayor John Mitchell.
“We here in New Bedford take community relations very seriously and work very hard in maintaining trust with all communities that call New Bedford home.”
Newly minted officer Kyle Cabral said the incident is a reminder to be aware of the dangers of the job.
“You have to keep it in the back of your mind and make sure you’re always keeping safe, protecting yourself, doing the best you can to come home every single night,” said Cabral.
New Bedford Police Chief David Provencher said there needs to be a conversation about communities and police.
“Hate and violence are not going to resolve those issues they’re only going to widen and broaden the gap.”
