PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A fifth person who participated in a scheme to defraud the IRS of nearly $600,000 has been sentenced in federal court.
The Rhode Island U.S. attorney’s office says Casimiro Santos got two years and a day in prison on charges of theft of government property and aggravated identity theft. He had pleaded guilty. He was also ordered to pay $211,000 in restitution.
Authorities say 29-year-old Jairo Morales and 45-year-old Julianna Martins of Providence orchestrated the scheme, which resulted in the filing of false income tax returns using stolen information from hundreds of people from Puerto Rico and fictitious W-2 forms from various companies.
They pleaded guilty to conspiracy, theft of government property and aggravated identity theft and got four years in prison.
Two others also pleaded guilty in the case.
