WEST WARWICK, R.I. (AP) – The source of a thunderous boom that was heard in West Warwick and elsewhere in Rhode Island remains a mystery.
WJAR-TV reports the boom on Sunday evening was loudest in West Warwick but that Coventry and Warwick residents also reported hearing it.
The station reports that National Grid said no transformers had blown. The Rhode Island National Guard said it wasn’t doing anything in the air. The Weston Observatory in Massachusetts ruled out any seismic activity in Rhode Island Sunday night.
Local police departments, which fielded calls about the boom, said they found no explanation for it.
One resident reported seeing a bright yellow and orange light just before the sound.
A few other loud booms widely reported in Rhode Island have also gone unexplained in recent years.
