Rhode Island Marines celebrated Veterans Day one day early as the state honored the anniversary of the Marine Corps Monday.
Rhode Island celebrated the 239th anniversary of the Corps by holding a brief ceremony and raising the Marine Corps flag over the State House. The ceremony was hosted by Representative Scott Slater in honor of his father, Thomas Slater, who served in the Marines.
The flag has been raised every year after a resolution was adopted in 2001 by State Representatives. It honors the men and women who have served in the Marine Corps.
The Corps was organized at a tavern in Philadelphia on Nov. 10, 1775.
