NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) – State officials estimate that Newport Grand’s video slot machine revenue will drop by more than two-thirds as it struggles to compete with casinos opening in Massachusetts in a few years.
The Providence Journal reports that officials said Thursday a casino in Fall River could result in a decline in gross revenue from Newport Grand’s video slot machines to $13.6 million from $44.7 million in five years.
Another option would be a casino in Taunton that would cut Newport Grand’s gambling revenue to $19.7 million by budget year 2019.
A representative of Newport Grand was not immediately available for comment Friday morning.
Rhode Island Lottery Director Gerald S. Aubin said state officials will be meeting with Newport Grand. He said officials are concerned that the casino will look for more relief.
