BARRINGTON, R.I. (AP) – Barrington school officials have reversed themselves, granting a diploma to a high school student after admitting to mistakes in how they worked through their differences with the youngster and her parents.

The Providence Journal reports that Molly Coffey received her diploma Thursday from Barrington High School.

In a memorandum of agreement, the School Committee said it had not provided a record of timely notices advising Molly, who has a mild form of Down syndrome, and her parents that she might not earn a diploma because she failed two final exams.

The School Committee also said it mistakenly said Molly had satisfied school policy for a World History test. The memorandum says the committee failed to offer Molly an opportunity to retake that test.

Molly had been allowed to participate in graduation exercises in June.
