PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Buddy Cianci’s opponent in the Providence mayor’s race is getting a little face time with President Barack Obama.
Democrat Jorge Elorza says he’s been given the chance to speak with Obama on Friday before the president delivers a speech on women and the economy at Rhode Island College.
Elorza picked up Obama’s endorsement on Monday, a rare foray by a president into municipal politics.
Cianci, the ex-mayor, is running as an independent. He was the city’s longest-serving mayor and was forced from office twice due to felony convictions.
Elorza says he wants to talk to Obama about how they can work together to try to bring jobs to Providence and fix city schools.
Republican Dan Harrop is polling in the single digits and has said he might vote for Elorza.
