President Barack Obama has stepped into local politics and endorsed Democratic candidate for Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza early Monday.
In a statement, the President said in part, “[Elorza] will bring honest leadership to Providence and fight to grow the local economy, improve public safety, expand affordable education, and create a transparent and friendly government and business climate to spur innovation and entrepreneurship.”
Elorza said he is thrilled to have the President’s endorsement.
“We’re excited,” said Elorza, “This is about honest leadership for a new direction and we’re going to keep talking about our positive message about creating jobs, about fixing our schools, and about making sure we change the culture at City Hall.”
A message was left with the Cianci campaign for comment.
Obama will be visiting Rhode Island on Friday.
