Republican candidate for governor Allan Fung stood outside the Rhode Island Housing office in Providence Wednesday to criticize Democrat Gina Raimondo’s record as a member of its board.
Fung said his opponent failed to show up to the agency’s board meetings, and overseeing a Pawtucket shelter for the mentally ill. The US Department of Housing and Urban Development ordered the agency to repay more than a million dollars after it was found that the shelter, Safe Haven, was operating in substandard facilities.
Fung had criticized Raimondo on the same issue Tuesday during a debate hosted by WPRI and the Providence Journal; Fung said the Treasurer was asleep at the switch.
“We just heard in the paper that they were fined for inappropriately using a million dollars of federal funds; where were you?” questioned Fung.
Raimondo said Fung is trying to make something out of nothing by attacking her membership of the Rhode Island Housing agency board.
“There some issues, some legitimate concerning issues and we immediately called in an outside audit and were already starting to work on it; [Fung] is just playing politics with an issue that is far too important to be playing politics with,” said Raimondo.
Raimondo continued saying Fung is trying to deflect his own record as mayor of Cranston during the ticket writing scandal.
Safe Haven shut its doors August 31.
