PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Democrat Gina Raimondo and Republican Allan Fung are squaring off in the first televised debate of the general election campaign.
The gubernatorial candidates are scheduled to participate in a debate in Providence on Tuesday evening. It’s being aired live on WPRI-TV. Moderate Party candidate Robert Healey is also taking part.
Raimondo, the treasurer, and Fung, Cranston’s mayor, are both campaigning on improving the struggling economy. She wants to make Rhode Island a center for manufacturing again. He says his $200 million tax-reduction plan will spur economic growth.
Raimondo is favored going in to the Nov. 4 election but Republicans see an opening. Fung reported far more cash on hand this month after the treasurer spent down her campaign account in a three-way primary. She’s getting help from outside groups.
