A new WPRI poll shows Democrats are in the lead in all five of the state races with three weeks to go until the election.
The poll shows Gina Raimondo has a slim lead over her opponent Republican Allan Fung, while her fellow Democrats in the Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, and Treasurer’s races all have a lead over their opponents. However a large enough percentage of undecided voters still remain in each race and could tip the race.
- Governor: Gina Raimondo (D) 41%, Allan Fung (R) 35%, undecided 12%
- Lt. Governor: Dan McKee (D) 36%, Catherine Taylor (R) 27%, undecided 31%
- Secretary of State: Nellie Gorbea (D) 41% John Carlevale (R) 27%, undecided 30%
- Attorney General: Peter Kilmartin (D) 46%, Dawson Hodgson (R) 32%, undecided 20%
- General Treasurer: Seth Magaziner (D) 47% Ernie Almonte (I) 34%, undecided 17%
Pollster Joe Fleming says for some of the Democrats, the primaries helped.
“Three of the Democrats who have the lead all ran in the Democratic primaries so they have the advantage of getting better known,” he said. “So the Republican and independent candidates have three more weeks to get themselves better known and let the voters know more about them in order to close these gaps.”
With the amount of undecided voters in the races, Fleming says each candidate has the opportunity to gain ground, but he says they need to push to get attention.
“The Providence mayor’s race seems to be sucking a lot of the oxygen out of all the races,” said Fleming. “Due to the fact that the media is concentrating on the governor’s and Providence mayor’s race, people down the ballot are having harder time to get media attention to get their issues out to the voters.”
