Democrat Gina Raimondo says Republican Allan Fung is responsible for the mischaracterization of her stance on abortion following Planned Parenthood’s endorsement of her campaign.
“I think Mayor Fung and his allies have tried to mischaracterize my position as being extreme and that’s unfortunate because it’s not,” said Raimondo.
The Treasurer drew fire from critics when she accepted an endorsement from Planned Parenthood last week and pledged to overturn a law which bans partial birth abortion. Bishop Thomas Tobin of the Providence Diocese said her views on partial-birth abortion are extreme and that the procedure borders on infanticide.
Raimondo said her campaign is not focusing on controversy but getting Rhode Islanders back to work.
Fung laughed at Raimondo’s assertion, saying he has been focused is on the economy.
“I have hardly said anything on this in fact it was the Treasurer who raised this issue, the only thing I’ve been talking about has been how I’m going to turn this economy around, how I’m going to bring jobs back to Rhode Island; that’s my main focus,” said Fung.
“To say it was something I brought up is actually a fabrication,” continued Fung, “She was the one who tried to fire the first shot and missed.”
