PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Gov. Lincoln Chafee says his effort to cut red tape in Rhode Island has identified over 250 changes, including the repeal of dozens of unnecessary regulations.
The Democrat’s office on Tuesday released a report summarizing the results of a review by state agencies of more than 26,000 pages within the state’s 1,600 regulations. The work took place over 17 months.
The changes identified include 45 repeals of outdated, unnecessary or obsolete regulations; 75 amendments to improve the regulatory system; and 133 consolidations of rules and regulations. Two-thirds of the changes have already been made.
The two candidates running to replace Chafee – Democrat Gina Raimondo and Republican Allan Fung – have both cited the need for regulatory reform, saying it will help improve the state’s business climate.
