NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) – Prospective developers of a casino at Newport Grand have endorsed a bid by city officials to highlight casino referendum questions in yellow to reduce voter confusion.
The City Council unanimously voted Wednesday to ask Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis to present the two casino-related questions on yellow paper to eliminate voter “uncertainty.” The issue came up after city officials realized there would be no separate local and statewide casino questions.
Question 1 deals with permitting table games at Newport Grand. Question 2 asks voters to approve an amendment to the state Constitution prohibiting relocation of gambling facilities.
The Newport Daily News Reports that former Providence Mayor Joe Paolino one of the developers, said in a letter to Mollis that the proposed ballot design will help lead to an informed vote.
