PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A civil liberties group says some voters were wrongly turned away from voting in Tuesday’s primary because they did not have a photo ID, rather than being given a provisional ballot to vote.
WLNE-TV reports that the Rhode Island chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union says it had poll watcher at 12 precincts on Tuesday, the first election when a photo ID was required to vote.
ACLU Executive Director Steven Brown says they saw some voters wrongly turned away.
Brown says the law says voters without a photo ID should be offered a provisional ballot.
The law has become an issue in the race for secretary of state. Democrat Nellie Gorbea wants to repeal it, while Republican John Carlevale wants to keep it.
