More than a dozen arrests have been made for public drinking, underage drinking, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest after thousands of college-age revelers gathered near Providence College.
The Providence Journal reports that authorities say at least 13 students at Providence College, Rhode Island College and Johnson & Wales University were arrested on Saturday.
Providence police Maj. Thomas Verdi said police and Providence College expected a student party and anticipated police action.
Verdi estimated that a couple of thousand college students came to the neighborhood and police dispersed at least 500 or more young people.
Police in Narragansett also anticipated large start-of-school parties from University of Rhode Island students living in the area. Chief of Police Dean Hoxsie told the WPRO Morning News with Gene Valicenti that the department deployed 15 squad cars to patrol the streets for out-of-control parties.
“The number of noise complaints called in by the residents were down substantially, we’ll probably have six or eight stickers going on houses after this weekend; down considerably from last year,” said Hoxsie.
Hoxsie the department made 68 arrests over the weekend.
