Traffic is already backing up and parking bans are in effect as Newport prepares for the arrival of President Barack Obama.
The president is scheduled to be in Newport for a few hours Friday evening to headline a fundraiser for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee at a private residence. U.S. House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi also is expected to attend.
While residents are excited for the President’s arrival, some say there are downsides.
“I think it’s a good thing however it’s Labor Day and he’s taking up all the parking which is a negative,” said Newport resident Pete Johnson.
Parking restrictions in Newport will be in effect from noon to 10 p.m. Friday. Police say no parking will be allowed on sections of Memorial Boulevard, Bellevue Avenue and Ocean Avenue. Many no parking signs were put up Thursday night.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee works to elect Democrats to the House of Representatives.
