PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Law enforcement officials in Rhode Island are teaming up to help children prepare for the upcoming school year.
State police, the Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association and the state attorney’s general’s office have been collecting backpacks and other school supplies for children in cooperation with several corporate sponsors, including Ocean State Job Lot, Benny’s Home and Auto, CVS Caremark, Samsonite, Walgreen’s and Hasbro.
Some of the donations to the Kids, Cops & Classrooms program will be displayed at a news conference on Friday at the State House.
Organizers say the goal of the drive is to help parents who are struggling financially to equip their children for school, even as many cash-strapped school systems are putting more of the burden on families to provide their own school supplies.
