A Rhode Island man who was on the run for years has been sentenced to life in prison for a botched robbery that resulted in murder in 2004.
Ramon Virola, 36, was found guilty of murder, felony assault, conspiracy to commit robbery and discharge of a firearm back in March. On Monday, Virola was sentenced to two life sentences plus an additional 20 non-parolable years.
Virola and three other men were charged in connection with the murder of Christopher Nelson, who was shot to death when he tried to wrestle a gun away from the men during a botched robbery attempt at his Federal Hill apartment.
The tree other suspects were already convicted; two for murder and another for assault and conspiracy.
Virola had been on the run following the crime, and was finally apprehended in 2011 in Arizona, where authorities say he was living under a false identity.
This article has been updated to correct Virola’s age.
