Rhode Island state police and Providence police are joining forces to increase their visibility in the wake of the latest deadly shooting in the capital city.

State Police Superintendent Colonel Steven O'Donnell tells WPRO's Buddy Cianci that several of his troopers are working alongside Providence police in a show of extra force, following the deadly shooting of a 12-year old girl in Providence late Friday night.

O’Donnell told WPRO's Buddy Cianci on Tuesday that a group of state troopers joined with Providence police officers to conduct high visibility patrols in their cruisers.

“We put a group of troopers together with Providence police, they drive in our cars in the city. It’s a great partnership, they learn our culture, we learn their culture. We do an urban police work. It’s a force multiplier, there’s extra in the city,” O’Donnell said.

Aynis Vargas, 12, was shot and killed as she stood with a group of people attending a party at the Hartford Park housing project just before midnight Friday.  Three other women were also shot but survived. No arrests have been made in the case.

"It’s a pretty good program where you get extra police officers on the street going to targeted areas," he said.

“In this particular shooting, the Providence police supplied intelligence, the gangs who are fighting, the areas they are fighting, and we hit those areas and we hit them hard.”

He said that it is similar to a program that has met with success in North Providence and Central Falls.
