BRISTOL, R.I. (AP) – Rhode Island is building a network of electric vehicle charging stations and has announced plans to transition to alternative fuels in state vehicles.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee on Tuesday announced details of the network, which will provide up to 50 charging stations around the state in the next three months. The first is at Roger Williams University in Bristol.
Both the network and the move to alternative fuel vehicles in the state fleet are funded by federal stimulus money.
Director of Administration Richard Licht says the state has already replaced 30 gas-powered cars with hybrids and plug-in hybrids. He says the state will have to buy those kinds of vehicles whenever possible. He says the new policy will help the environment and save money because fuel costs are lower.
