Billionaire New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg will host a political fundraiser for Rhode Island General Treasurer Gina Raimondo, who is considering a run for governor of Rhode Island in 2014, wpri.com reported Monday.
The fundraiser represents a sharp shift in Bloomberg’s involvement in Rhode Island politics. He was a high visibility supporter of Lincoln Chafee in the 2010 campaign for governor.
Bloomberg, an independent, campaigned twice in Rhode Island for Chafee, then an independent. Chafee had a much-publicized departure from the Republican party after losing his bid in 2006 to retain his U.S. Senate seat.
Raimondo is a Democrat. Chafee joined the Democratic Party last month after discussions with President Barack Obama at the White House. Providence Mayor Angel Taveras, a Democrat, is also considering running for governor next year.
