U.S. District Judge Ronald Lagueux said in court that he will not issue a preliminary injunction that would block the implementation of tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge. The attorney representing RI Department of Transportation Jeffrey Gladstone says the construction will go forward.
“I feel very strongly about the state’s case. We knew that we did everything correctly and we’re ready to go forward,” said Gladstone.
Lawyers for Bristol, Portsmouth and Tiverton argued in the courtroom that the tolls would violate Federal law. They said the case isn't over yet.
“It’s an uphill battle to get this Federal Judge particularly to stop the state from proceeding with it’s plans, but I’ll talk to my client and we’ll discuss the avenues that are available including an immediate appeal to the first circuit from the denial of the injunction,” said Portsmouth Attorney Kevin Gavin.
