WOONSOCKET, R.I. (AP) – Lawmakers in Rhode Island are looking at a proposal to allow Woonsocket to raise taxes by $2.5 million to help the city reach a firmer financial footing.
The House Municipal Government Committee is set to review the tax proposal Thursday. The Senate has already approved a similar bill.
The tax plan comes from the state budget commission now overseeing Woonsocket's finances. It's part of a five-year plan to address the city's $17 million deficit.
Last year, a $6.6 million supplemental tax proposal failed in the General Assembly.
If the tax plan is approved, the average Woonsocket resident would pay $150 in additional property taxes and an extra $90 in car taxes.
The House has not scheduled a vote on the legislation.
