Donald Greenslit, the man who was convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend and then dismembering and burning her body in 2012, was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday.
After calling Greenslit’s lack of remorse and acceptance of responsibility “appalling,” Judge Susan McGuirl said she would give him more time in prison if she could.
“He is a monster who would kill his wife in front of his own children, then heartlessly tell them, “she went on vacation… forever”,” said Jamie Ouellette, the sister of Stacie Dorego, who has cared for Dorego’s two young children who survived the fire in their Johnston home. She acknowledged that her sister had a years-long drug addiction problem.
“We know we can’t blame anyone for the fact that Stacie struggled. But Don was the devil, he was the perfect enabler,” Ouellette said.
Greenslit declined to make any comment. His attorney plans to file an appeal.
“Who would leave their children in the house with the smoke billowing around them, scared to death?” asked Judge McGuirl. “Is it a monster? That’s what the family calls him. All I know is that the person that did that had to have an evil mind, such that they had no concern or regard at all for any human life, including his wife or his children.”
Greenslit was found guilty in March of first degree murder and other charges in the January, 2012 stabbing death of Stacie Dorego, 39.
Authorities say they found Dorego’s burned remains in a fireplace and the couple’s children, ages three and five, sitting in a bedroom and coughing from the smoke.
Judge McGuirl sentenced him to life for the murder, five additional years for failing to report the death, and one additional year each for obstructing firefighters who responded to the fire in their home, and for violating a no-contact order; seven years to be added after completing the life term, for which is may be eligible for parole after serving 20 years at the ACI.
