EAST GREENWICH, R.I. (AP) – Former National Basketball Association star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has been picked to give the commencement address at the New England Institute of Technology.
The school said the Hall of Fame center with the famous skyhook shot will address the graduating class on May 5 at the Rhode Island Convention Center.
Abdul-Jabbar played in the NBA for 20 years for the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Lakers and is its all-time leading scorer with 38,387 points. He is a 19-time all-star and was six times named Most Valuable Player.
John Hazen White Jr. will receive an honorary doctorate during the ceremony. He is president of Taco Inc. of Cranston, one of the state's most successful manufacturers.
