Rhode Island officials and law makers joined together at the State House to announce three bills having to do with school safety.
“We know as adults, you can’t presume you have to plan.” Said House Speaker Gordon Fox.
These bills come after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting rocked the nation.
“Doesn’t every parent deserve the right to believe their children are going to a safe environment? How do we expect our children to learn if they live in fear?” Said Fox.
The bills call for:
- Every district have routine school safety assessments in conjunction with local police, fire and school safety teams.
- Safety plans to be certified annually.
- Fire and lock down drills will be modeled after national standards.
“As someone who goes to work every day in the schools, I know we already do a lot. But after the awful events that have taken place in Newtown Chairman McNamara and I reached out to the school officials, to law enforcement, fire marshal, mental health officials and others to ensure that our schools implement the best preparedness plans possible.” Said Senator Hanna Gallo, one of the bills sponsors.
