PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Supporters and opponents of gay marriage will travel to the Rhode Island State House Thursday evening for the highly anticipated Senate Judiciary hearing on same-sex marriage in Rhode Island.
The Judiciary Committee intends to hear from both sides of the gay marriage debate and review alternative legislation that would put the question on the ballot as a referendum. The proposed referendum – which gay marriage supporters dislike – also would allow religious leaders to refuse to perform same-sex weddings and say small businesses like florists or caterers could decline to provide services to a gay wedding.
The Judiciary Committee has not scheduled a vote.
The Rhode Island General Assembly announced yesterday they will live stream committee hearings, like Senate Judiciary, online. Click here to watch.
