Brown University Health Services sent out a letter to all students warning of a widespread gastrointestinal virus going around campus that causes nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Students have reported an abrupt onset of these symptoms, which usually last for a day or two.
In the past three days, a total of 67 students have come down with the bug; 18 students have gone to the ER and one was admitted. According to the Brown Medical Director, the campus normally sees only three cases of stomach illness a week.
Brown said it is working in conjunction with the Rhode Island Department of Health to determine a cause and to minimize further spread.
The Department of Health confirmed Wednesday evening that the virus was norovirus.
Brown is advising students to clean and disinfect all surfaces, wash their laundry thoroughly and keep their hands clean.
