An 18-year-old East Greenwich High School student, David Constanza, was arrested and charged with one count of possession of a firearm on school grounds for bringing a BB gun to school Thursday.
Costanza told his vice principal that he found the gun in the boy's bathroom. The vice principal called the East Greenwich Police Department’s school resource officer who identified the weapon as a .45 caliber replica BB gun, which was not loaded.
"In light of all the stuff that's been going on in the country, it was quite troubling," Jon Chirside, an East Greenwich Police Sergeant told WPRO.
An investigation determined that the gun actually belonged to Costanza, and that he had brought it to the school. No direct threat of harm was made to any student or school official.
Costanza was was arraigned before bail commissioner Michael Robinson Thursday. As a condition of bail, he is to have no contact with East Greenwich High School. The case will be referred to the RI Department of Attorney General for prosecution.
