Jurors in the murder trial of Donald Greenslit deliberated about three hours Friday without reaching a verdict, and will resume their discussions on Monday morning.
The jury got the case Friday afternoon after listening to closing arguments by attorneys for both the defense and prosecution. Greenslit, 53, is charged with killing his common-law wife, Stacie Dorego in January, 2012, and dismembering and burning her body in a fireplace in the basement of their home in Johnston.
Defense attorney Mark Dana told jurors that there was no forensic evidence linking his client to the killing.
"The only evidence associating this defendant with that stabbing is a jailhouse snitch, and that's what they want you to rely on. And you shouldn't."
Prosecutor Sara Tindall-Woodman urged jurors to use their common sense.
"The defendant was the only adult found in 16 Pershing Road on the 22nd of January last year, and only minutes before, a smoking body was pulled from the basement fireplace. He could not be bothered to be pried from that house."
Two alternate jurors were named, and the 10 women and two men began their deliberations at about 1:30 P.M., concluding their talks at about 4:30. They were instructed by Judge Susan McGuirl to return Monday at 9:30 A.M.
