PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) –The city of Providence is suing its longtime actuary, claiming it made "fundamental and inexcusable errors" in calculating the estimated savings from a pension system overhaul that will cost $10 million.
The lawsuit against Buck Consultants was filed in federal court Tuesday. It alleges breach of contract and fiduciary duty, negligence and violation of the Rhode Island False Claims Act.
The suit says the city relied on Buck's savings projections for a pension increase freeze and that Mayor Angel Taveras used the flawed assumptions in negotiations with unions and retirees. It says the city wouldn't have agreed to the pension changes to which it's now bound.
Taveras' spokesman says the city is seeking $10.8 million in damages.
A message was left with Buck. WPRI-TV first reported on the suit.
