FEMA has extended the deadline for Rhode Islanders to request state-federal disaster recovery assistance in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
“The state asked for it and we granted it. As far as the particular reasons, I believe they wanted to just be sure that everyone who has damage from Sandy does register with FEMA,” says Sarah Magee, the Media Relations Specialist for FEMA.
Originally the deadline was Monday, January 14, but has now been extended to February 13. Anyone with losses from the superstorm can register online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or register by calling FEMA at 800-621-3362.
“We urge people, even if they think they don’t qualify for whatever reason, that they go ahead and register anyway and let FEMA decide whether they qualify,” says Magee.
FEMA-state assistance may include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, uninsured vehicle damage, lost or damaged personal property and other costs incurred because of Sandy.
