The House is set to reconvene on Sunday to deal with the so-called “fiscal cliff”. Both Congressmen Jim Langevin and David Cicilline have been vocal about their frustrations with House Speaker John Boehner.
In a statement, Congressman Langevin says:
“As I wrote to the Speaker this week, a deal to avert the fiscal cliff is well within reach, so even a short period of time should be enough to get something done. We all agree that the middle class cannot afford a tax increase and the American people have been clear in their support for a balanced compromise of new revenue from those who can afford it combined with targeted spending cuts that protect the middle class. If Republican leaders are willing to bring a bill with these parameters to a vote, I am confident that we will get bipartisan support and our economy will be stronger for it.”
In part of a letter sent to Speaker Boehner, Congressman Cicilline says,
“Last week, after trying and failing to pass a proposal that had no chance of being signed into law, you walked away from negotiations and adjourned the House. While I agree with your decision to call the House back into session this Sunday, I share the frustrations already expressed by my constituents and families across our country at your refusal to lead on this issue. That’s why I am urging you today to commit to achieving a bipartisan agreement that will protect seniors, middle class families, and small business owners before the end of the year. The stakes are high and it is critical that the House be a partner for, not an obstacle against, the progress on such an important issue for so many hardworking families.”
