Those bringing in a donation to the Toys for Tots campaign on Thursday got a very special offer. Any customer who brought in a new unwrapped toy to the DMV received a “Red Return Ticket”. These tickets allow holders to go to the front of the line to process their transaction. They are good for a one time use and are valid for a year.
“We had a lot of people who came in over the last few days who brought a toy in, and we basically said to them, ‘gee the program is Thursday we can’t give you a red slip today.’ And ‘no problem, I don’t need the red slip I really just wanted to donate a toy,” said Administrator at the Division of Motor Vehicles.
The DMV teamed up with the US Marines for the annual campaign. They say the special promotion is helping get more donations.
“I think the red tickets helped out a lot, but a lot of people actually do see the sign outside, the toys for tots sign, and they come in not even knowing about the red tickets. So it’s a combination of both but I think for the most part, the red ticket is what attracted a lot of these people and brought a lot of these toys in,” said Lance Corporal Rivera.
Randall Poirer is one the many people that brought a toy on Thursday.
“I said, well I’m coming to the registry, I might as well do a good thing and give a toy to a child who could use it,” said Poirer.
