A bridge over the Pawtuxet River in Coventry has been reopened after it was badly damaged during the flooding in March, 2010.
The Laurel Avenue Bridge was rededicated on Monday to honor Rhode Island’s Revolutionary War hero General Nathanael Greene. He lived right down the road from the site of the span, and his homestead there is a historical landmark.
Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse spoke at the event along with a remembrance of Gen. Greene by Janet Uhlar, and author and trustee of the Nathanael Greene Homestead.
Governor Lincoln Chafee commanded members of the Rhode Island Historic Militia to fire a musket salute, and eighth grade students from Nathanael Greene Middle School in Providence attended to learn more about their school's namesake.
Now called the Maj. Gen. Nathanael Greene Memorial Bridge, the span was built using $3.2 million in federal emergency flood recovery funds.
