PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Providence police say a man being robbed by an armed assailant turned the tables and used his own gun to shoot the suspect.

Maj. David Lapatin says a man told investigators he was smoking outside at about 11 p.m. Monday when someone put a gun to his head.

The suspect forced the victim into his apartment where a struggle ensued, and the victim got his own gun and fired at his attacker.

The suspect fled but police soon got a call from Rhode Island Hospital reporting that a man had shown up with a gunshot wound.

Police say 26-year-old Tyrelle Palmer faces robbery and firearms charges. His injuries are not considered life threatening.

It’s not clear if he has an attorney.

The man who shot Palmer has not been charged.
