PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – The National Institute on Aging has awarded a grant worth more than $50 million to Brown University and a Boston nonprofit to lead a nationwide effort to improve the care for people with Alzheimer’s disease.

The Ivy League university in Providence announced the grant Tuesday. It’s expected to total $53.4 million to Brown and Hebrew SeniorLife, a Harvard Medical School affiliate providing senior care services.

They plan to create a collaborative research incubator to develop trials aimed at evaluating interventions for Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia. The grant supports the incubator for five years.

Brown says experts from more than 30 research institutions will participate. It’s the largest federal award in Brown’s history.

The first year of the grant is $6 million. The remaining funds are subject to future appropriations.
