NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard says one person is dead following a collision between a motorboat and a sailboat participating in a regatta off Newport.

Petty Officer Zachary Hupp says the Coast Guard was notified of the collision at about 2:45 p.m. Sunday and learned that a female crew member on the sailboat had been thrown into the water.

Hupp says the woman had been pulled unresponsive from the water prior to the arrival of a rescue boat launched from Coast Guard Station Castle Hill. She was later pronounced dead.

The woman’s name and age has not been released and no other information about how the collision occurred was immediately available.

Hupp says the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management will be leading the investigation into the incident.
