Community pushes back on proposed Newport Grand site development

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) – A Rhode Island developer’s plan to build a $100 million mixed-use project at the site of the now-closed Newport Grand slots parlor is facing an uphill battle with the city’s Planning Board.

The Carpionato Group presented a zoning ordinance proposal for the “Newport North End” to the board on Monday.

The proposal received mixed reviews as board members and the public questioned the lack of details on the development’s impact on the community and environment.

Carpionato representatives say a zoning proposal is necessary for any detailed planning to move forward.

The Newport Daily News reports the project would include two six-story hotels, two six-story apartment buildings, offices and medical, retail and restaurant space.

The group says the project would generate $1.5 million in tax revenue for the city.
