NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) – The financial officer at the U.S. Naval War College is leaving, but college officials say his departure isn’t connected to an investigation at the school.

The college said Wednesday that Comptroller Mark Murphy will leave Aug. 2 to teach at the Defense Acquisition University in Virginia.

Rear Adm. Jeffrey Harley was removed as the college’s president last month after The Associated Press reported he was under investigation for questionable behavior. The allegations include excessive spending.

The Navy told The Associated Press last week the investigation is ongoing.

College officials say Murphy’s departure isn’t connected to the investigation or Harley’s removal- the transition has been planned for months.

Murphy says he was selected to fill a competitive vacancy.

Rear Adm. Shoshana Chatfield was named the new president, the college’s first female leader.
