Cranston Mayor Allan Fung’s campaign account was apparently targeted by thieves, as a phony paper check in the account’s name was made out to an out-of-state company.

The check, in the amount of $15,000 was deposited in an out-of-state federal credit union on June 18, according to Barbara Ann Fenton, Fung’s wife and campaign treasurer.

Fenton said that evening, she and Fung contacted their bank as well as Rhode Island State Police Superintendent Colonel James Manni, and he referred the case to New York State Police. Fenton said the New York State Police are treating the case as an ongoing investigation.

They (NY State Police) “have been excellent to work with during this entire incident,” Fenton said in a statement.

The Rhode Island State Board of Elections was notified and the bank, Washington Trust Co. opened a new account credited the full amount to the campaign account.

Fung ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2014 and 2018.
