The Rhode Island Department of Transportation has announced plans to replace Henderson Bridge.

The state has said that construction, which could take a year or two, would begin after about a year of engineering work, which is expected to go out to bid by this summer.

The Henderson Bridge connects the city of East Providence with the eastern side of Providence.

Officials say the bridge, which was built in 1969, was declared structurally deficient in 1996. Millions of dollars have been spent on routine and emergency repairs.

U.S. Sen. Jack Reed’s office says the state will receive about $55 million from the federal government for bridge projects.
