PODCAST: ACLU criticizes Bristol/Warren school for using police officers for discipline

WARREN, R.I. (AP) — The Rhode Island American Civil Liberties Union is criticizing a Rhode Island school district’s decision to bring in police officers to help resolve student disciplinary issues at a middle school.

In a letter sent Monday to school officials, five organizations that advocate for the rights of students and children said the Bristol-Warren School District should expand resources that have reportedly been reduced to address the social service needs of students. The Providence Journal reports the School Department did vote to bring in additional mental-health services following a forum in which a dozen teachers called for more guidance counselors.

Kickemuit Middle School was forced to close on Feb. 1 after teachers staged a sick-out protest over what teachers say is a discipline crisis at the school.
