PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A state lawmaker has introduced a bill that would impose a new fine on people who drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs or fail to submit to a breathalyzer test.

Sen. James Seveney, a Portsmouth Democrat, wants to impose a $300 fine for any DUI conviction or violation for refusal to take a breathalyzer test. The money would help pay for substance abuse education in Rhode Island.

Seveney recently discussed the need for increased funding for substance abuse prevention programs with the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal’s chief magistrate.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is considering the bill. Rep. Dennis Canario, also a Portsmouth Democrat, has introduced similar legislation in the House.

The funds would be allocated to the Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals for programming.
