Traffic patterns will begin to change Saturday on the Route 6/10 interchange project, a four-year, $410 million dollar reconstruction of the two highways that cut through the Olneyville neighborhood of Providence.

“We expect that there will be some delays in the range of two to six minutes in people’s travel time,” said Rhode Island Department of Transportation Director Peter Alviti, who urged drivers to seek out alternate routes. No lanes would be eliminated, but they will be shifted to accommodate the construction work, he said.

Seven bridges are being reconstructed in the work area, some have been structurally deficient for decades.

“We’re finally doing something about it, we’re going to fix it,” Alviti said.

Beginning on Saturday, the Broadway exit ramp on Route 10 North is being closed to traffic, while people traveling on Route 10 North will be shifted to the right on a new set of recently constructed lanes.

The existing Westminster Street exit ramp will be reconfigured, and two bridges at Broadway and Westminster Street will be modified.

Alviti said detour maps and other information helpful to motorists are posted on the RIDOT website.
